Exceptional performances of Shakespeare on Feb 26
Lynchie Bowlay and Jewel-Ann Lessie both showed amazing power and versatility today as they tackled the role of Paris. Their performances were all the more remarkable since they are both young women, and they were performing a male role. Dewitt John brought humor to his performances, as did Andre Clacken. Shanice Jerriho was unintentionally convincing as the whiny teenaged Juliet. Shemaiah Moseley was a domineering Prince. Rochelle Johnson was a fiercely protective Nurse. Today's performances clearly showed improvement and growth from yesterday's observations. Excellent work to all who performed today!

Exceptional Performances of Shakespeare today
Today was our first day of Shakespearean presentations, in room 210, with various classes as audiences. Certain students deserve special mention for the effort and ability they demonstrated with the material.
Kiara Page was an incredible, yet completely credible Juliet. She used gestures, vocal inflections, and movement around the stage to draw the audience into her performance. When asked how she'd done such a fine job, Ms. Page replied, "I forced my brothers to practice with me all of the time during the break."
Other students whose performances were exceptional were: Madeline Acevedo, Arianna Fearon, Shanea Brathwaite, Crystal David, D'Andra Howell, Camilla Pierre Pierre, Dequan Williams, Yanique Boswell, Debralee Brown, Kimberlyn Brooks, and, after some coaxing, Igwe Nwankwor.

Shakespearean Acting Troupes
All of my students are expected to be prepared to present a short scene from Shakespeare with other members of their class on February 25th. Each student needs to have a prompt book with information about his or her character's feelings and expressions, and the general movements of the scene, on this day. The promptbook should include a sketch of your character's costume, and any props he or she should be carrying, as well as a paragraph explaining why you have chosen to outfit your character this way.
Your lines must be memorized!
You may cut lines from your scene, but you may not add any additional lines or change Shakespeare's language. If you cut lines, make sure you don't lose any meaning from the scene. Also, cross them out of your prompt book; I want to have the entire script of the original scene from you, showing your cuts clearly.
We will be working in room 210, so imagine what you can to with the tables and chairs there to suggest your setting. You are expressly forbidden to bring any fake weapons to school (swords, etc.). However, you may do things with your costume to suggest these weapons, such as wear a scabbard (a sword-holder). Other classes have been invited to attend, so be prepared to impress!
9th grade Black History Month Project
Here is a link to the article I distributed for you in class on February 14:
http://www.nytimes.com/1991/08/21/nyregion/082191CROWN.html?ex=1203483600&en=9067cea643a68bca&ei=5070
You will have to copy and paste it into your browser in order to view it. It is the same article that I handed out in class, I am simply including it here in case you did not receive it, or lost it.
Your assignment, due February 29, is to write a three page paper, using this article as a starting point, to research race relations in Brooklyn, or New York City as a whole.
You can discuss the period of time leading up to the riots, for as far back as you can find information. So, one possibility could be slave trading in New York, and how it contributed to the feelings that African-Americans had in Brooklyn in August of 1991. Or you could think about the broken dreams of the David Dinkins administration in New York. I am leaving it up to you what to choose -- anything that interests you.
Alternatively, you may also discuss New York in the aftermath of the Crown Heights riots. What lessons were learned? How have things changed? How could it be only 17 years later, and most of you don't even know this happened? Has New York City overcome racism? Or are we sitting on a racial time-bomb once again?
No matter which approach you take, you need to have researched two other magazine or newspaper articles to discuss in your paper. Your paper should consider a conflict, meaning a disagreement, confrontation, or debate, surrounding race relations in New York (for example, the Crown Heights riots), and a compromise made as the result of that conflict. You should take it in any direction that interests you.
Your paper must be double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12pt font. It mus be three pages long, and its fourth page must be an APA-style bibliography, citing at least three newspaper articles, one of which will be the one we discussed in class. So you need two newspaper articles in addition to the one I gave you.
10th grade Black History Month Project (7th and 8th periods)
This is the link where I found the selected headlines for your project:
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/issues_in_depth/20030116.html
You will need to copy and paste this link into your browser. Then, you will need to click the headline, then click the text which says, "Read the full text of the Times article."
Your paper should be 3-5 pages, Times New Roman 12pt font, not including a one-page bibliography in APA style. You need to use one of these articles, plus another related newspaper article and a secondary source, both of which you need to find on your own, using the internet. Your assignment is to come up with a thesis based on what you've read, and to write a paper demonstrating how the article you read affects the way we live now. This project is due on Feb 29.
