Homework for Jan 9

First period:
Write an essay, using evidence from your class notes, explaining the theme of Franco Zeffirelli's interpretation of the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet." Use your notes from yesterday's in-class viewing of the scene to come up with a theme, or larger meaning, which Zeffirelli is applying to Shakespeare's work.

9th grade:
Compare the theme of Franco Zeffirelli's interpretation of the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet" to the theme of Baz Lurmann's interpretation. Using specific examples of literary devices from your in-class notes, write three paragraphs explaining how the themes of the two differ, and how you arrived at your interpretation of each.

10th grade:
Make note of as many literary devices as you can think of (use your class notes to help you) in a T-chart comparing Franco Zeffirelli's version of the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet" to Baz Luhrmann"s version. Use this T-chart to help you develop a theme for each, which should be phrased as a complete sentence at the top of your T-chart. What could be a controlling idea for these two pieces, based on the themes you've developed? Write this at the bottom of your T-chart.
