Holiday Project
All classes:
You are the director of "Romeo and Juliet!"
Create a prompt book for Act 2, scene 1 of "Romeo and Juliet." Rewrite the lines out of the book onto a different set of pages (you may download and print the lines if you wish). Write in how the set should be dressed (what the scene should look like), from where the actors should enter and exit, what props will be used, what costumes will be worn, and include an annotated sketch of the scene (you may use a downloaded picture or collage, but you must label the picture thoughtfully, including where your actors will stand, and why various items are on stage).
Due on January 2.
Reread any sections of Act 1 of "Romeo and Juliet" that you found difficult.
Read through Act 2, scene 4 of "Romeo and Juliet" by January 2. This will include the famous "balcony scene," Act 2, scene 2.
Eighth period, 10th grade:
Read Passage I, handed out on Wednesday, and make notes of all the literary techniques used by Shirley Jackson to tell her story about speaking to a local newspaper reporter.
Homework for Dec 20
All classes:
Rehearse for performance of Act 1, scene 5 of "Romeo and Juliet." If you have been assigned a role, familiarize yourself with your lines, so you do not stumble over tricky words. Bring in your masks from last weekend's homework assignment. Practice the "Pilgrims and Saints Dance," and be ready to perform Act 1, scene 5 in class tomorrow.
Eighth period:
Develop a controlling idea which brings together all of the scenes of Act 1 of "Romeo and Juliet."

CUNY Arts/College Now Show a Great Success!
I want to congratulate all of the students from my first period class on their amazing success with their interpretation, "What is Being Black?" from John Oliver Killens's book The Cotillion. I've tried to attach two videos taken by my father of my students' performance in the show, but it seems like they are coming up as still photos for now. I'll work on that. Due to the capacity of his camera, my father missed group 3's performance in his recording. However, CUNY makes a tape of this show every year, and I can help interested parents or students to track down a copy. I'll try to publish more photos as they become available.
I am so proud of you all! Saphire, Daniel Paul, and Camille's projects were presented for special mention at the beginning of the show, so, even though you couldn't be there, your work was recognized.
I hope you all realize just how your hard work is what made the performance such a success. Hard work, energy, and commitment are the three qualities you all exhibited, and it really came across to those of us in the audience. Great job!

Green shirt, black pants for group 1, red shirt, black pants for group 2, and black shirt and pants for everyone else, and black shoes, if you have them. Don't wear your outfit to school, wear your uniform, but bring it with you.

Performance TOMORROW at Medgar Evers College!
Students and parents, I invite you all to see my first period 9th grade English class perform their interpretation of the themes of John Oliver Killens's novel, The Cotillion, tomorrow, December 7, at 5pm in the auditorium of Medgar Evers College, 1650 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY. These students have been working on this show since the start of school, but, I must say, since taking over as their teacher in November, I have been impressed and awed by their dedication and ability. Show your support, and come out and cheer for them! Parents of my other students are also welcome -- I'd enjoy the opportunity to meet you, since I started after open school night.
This project was a major factor in student success for the second marking period. The performance itself will be graded for participation and enthusiasm for the third marking period.
